A shooting at an Airbnb rental in Bath Township, Ohio, injured nine people during a large birthday party early on March 17, 2024. Bath Township Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 00:16 hours at a property located on Top of the Hill Drive, which had been advertised on various social media platforms, attracting a significant crowd.
Police Chief Vito Sinopoli described the scene as chaotic. “Upon arrival, our officers were met with a chaotic scene and administered life-saving aid to the injured,” he stated during a press conference. The victims, a mix of juveniles and adults, were transported to local hospitals, but their conditions have not been disclosed.
Sinopoli expressed condolences, saying, “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the victims, families, and all those affected by this devastating incident.” Emergency responders from over a dozen agencies, including police and fire departments from nearby Akron, Copley, Fairlawn, and Richfield, provided immediate assistance at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Investigators are working to identify the unknown suspects who opened fire on the first floor of the home before fleeing. The Bath Township Detective Bureau, supported by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. Authorities are also in contact with Airbnb and the property owner as part of their investigation.
The property’s listing has been suspended on Airbnb’s platform while the inquiry continues. An Airbnb spokesperson stated, “We are heartbroken by this senseless act of gun violence, and our thoughts are with the injured victims and all those affected by it.” The spokesperson confirmed that unauthorized gatherings are prohibited and that the account of the individual responsible for booking the rental has been removed.
This incident brought to light the ongoing issue of short-term rentals in Bath Township, which are prohibited under local zoning regulations. The property was purchased by Michael Jones for $1.2 million in 2022, during which he was facing federal charges for mail and wire fraud in Nevada. Following his sentencing to six and a half years in prison, Jones transferred ownership of the home to his wife, Shauna Gardner.
Community Response
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik addressed the shooting, noting the troubling presence of young people at the party. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure community safety, stating, “The City of Akron is committed to continuing our work alongside parents, youth-serving non-profits, and our broader community.”
Authorities are urging anyone who attended the party or possesses information—such as photos or videos—to contact Bath Township Police at 330-666-3736. The community is grappling with the implications of this violent incident, emphasizing the importance of accountability and safety.
This shooting highlights the broader concerns surrounding youth safety and the potential risks associated with large gatherings in residential areas. As the investigation unfolds, local officials remain committed to addressing these issues and ensuring justice for those affected by this violence.
