The Teachers Health Trust (THT), a nonprofit health insurance plan for educators in Clark County, Nevada, has announced a significant reduction in premiums for some families starting in January 2026. This decision comes as other health insurance plans across the country are facing rising costs. THT, which has been serving educators for over 42 years, will implement changes to its premium structure, offering flat rates or reductions for its members.
Beginning in 2026, THT will introduce five new plan tiers: Employee only, Employee + Spouse, Employee + Child, Employee + Children, and Employee + Family. This restructuring is designed to ensure that members either maintain their current premium rates or, in some cases, save up to $2,200 annually. For those qualifying for the new Employee + Family tier, this translates to a potential 20% reduction in costs each year.
Families currently enrolled in the THT Signature Plan can also experience savings by switching to the newly enhanced Advantage Plan. This plan, while featuring a higher deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, offers comprehensive coverage for preventive and many other services without requiring members to meet the deductible first. The potential savings from this switch range from $2,016 to $2,892 annually.
THT attributes these cost reductions to a rigorous review of administrative expenses. The organization allocates only 5.9% of its revenue to administrative costs, significantly lower than the industry standard of 15%. This efficiency has resulted in approximately $20 million in additional health care benefits for educators in the region.
Innovative programs, such as the Health Investment Program, have also contributed to THT’s ability to lower costs. This initiative allows for direct contracts with a trusted network of local providers, ensuring priority access to appointments while covering services at 100% for THT members.
Tom Zumtobel, CEO of the Teachers Health Trust, emphasized the importance of these changes in light of the national health care crisis, stating, “Nationwide, health care remains a hot button topic as too many families are facing rising costs that they can’t afford. At THT, we remain committed to enacting innovative solutions, like our Health Investment Program, and managing health care costs so educators in Clark County and their families can count on improved access and reduced costs for the health care services they need.”
Established in October 1983 through a collaboration between the Clark County School District (CCSD) and the Clark County Education Association (CCEA), the Teachers Health Trust serves all educators and their dependents within the district and partner charter schools in Clark County.
