U.S. Envoy Announces Next Steps in Gaza Ceasefire Talks

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff has confirmed that preparations for the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan are advancing following high-level talks in Miami. These discussions involved representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, and focused on establishing a unified governing body in Gaza. The aim is to ensure the protection of civilians and the maintenance of public order, according to Witkoff’s post on social media platform X.

During the Miami discussions, Witkoff emphasized the importance of regional integration. This includes measures for trade facilitation, infrastructure development, and cooperation on essential resources such as energy and water. He stated that these initiatives are crucial for Gaza’s recovery, regional stability, and long-term prosperity.

Progress from the First Phase

The talks also reviewed the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire, which Witkoff described as yielding significant progress. Humanitarian aid entered the Gaza Strip, hostilities were reduced, and there was a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces. Most notably, all living hostages were released, along with a number of deceased individuals. The only remaining hostage is Ran Gvili, an Israeli police officer who was killed during the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Witkoff’s comments follow a previous meeting in Cairo that included intelligence chiefs from Turkey and Egypt, as well as Qatar’s Prime Minister. Sources have indicated that these discussions focused on enhancing cooperation with the Civil Military Coordination Center to address any potential ceasefire violations.

Next Steps in the Ceasefire Plan

The second phase of the ceasefire plan involves deploying an international stabilization force and establishing an international authority to govern Gaza. Disarmament of Hamas is also a key component of this phase. According to The Times of Israel, Israel will adjust its military presence in the region as part of these preparations.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains watchful of the developments in Gaza. The outcomes of these high-level discussions will play an essential role in shaping the future of the region and the lives of its inhabitants.
