UPDATE: NBC’s crime drama “The Hunting Party” just shocked fans with the unexpected death of a main character in its season 2 premiere, which aired on January 8, 2024. Viewers learned that Oliver Odell, played by Nick Wechsler, did not survive the poisoning that left him in peril at the end of season 1.
The devastating news was revealed when FBI secret agent Bex Henderson, portrayed by Melissa Roxburgh, mourned the loss of her ex. Oliver’s death occurred offscreen, surprising many fans who had anticipated his return after being listed in NBC’s promotional materials for the new season.
Executive producer JJ Bailey disclosed to TVLine that the decision to kill off Oliver was not taken lightly. “One thing that we sort of faced was creatively, it was hard to involve [Oliver] in the field and to find stories that felt like it really serviced what we wanted to do with the character and with Bex,” Bailey explained.
Co-executive producer Jake Coburn echoed this sentiment, stating that the emotional arc between Bex and Oliver had reached its limits. “It felt like going forward, we were more looking in terms of the characters that were going to be part of her future story,” Coburn said.
Roxburgh shared her surprise at the decision, admitting she had hoped for a different outcome following the intense season 1 finale. “I was really hoping [he’d live],” she remarked. “But you know what? It’s a great plot twist… audiences will be more inclined to tune in because I think that they weren’t expecting that.”
As the series progresses, Bex will reassemble her team to continue pursuing the serial killers released after the explosion of a secret underground prison known as The Pit. New dynamics emerge with the introduction of Eve Lazarus, played by Kari Matchett, who now leads the team, though her mysterious past raises suspicions among the group.
