Chargers Expand Coaching Staff with Eight New Appointments

The Los Angeles Chargers have significantly bolstered their coaching staff by hiring eight new assistant coaches for head coach Jim Harbaugh. This move, announced on Friday, comes after the departures of offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin, both of whom were let go last month. Additionally, linebackers coach NaVorro Bowman resigned, prompting further changes within the team’s coaching lineup.

Among the key appointments is Butch Barry, who will take over as offensive line coach. Barry joins the Chargers after three seasons in the same role with the Miami Dolphins, working closely with the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel. Another notable addition is Sean Spence, who has been appointed as the linebackers coach. Spence previously coached at Western Michigan, where he collaborated with the Chargers’ new defensive coordinator, Chris O’Leary.

The full list of new hires includes:
Julian Campenni as assistant defensive line coach. Campenni comes from Rutgers University, where he spent the last two seasons.
Rob Everett as an assistant offensive assistant, who also has experience working with McDaniel in Miami.
Adam Gase, known for his previous head coaching roles with the Dolphins (2016-2018) and the New York Jets (2019-2020), returns to the NFL as a passing game specialist.
Chandler Henry will serve as tight ends coach, having worked with McDaniel for four seasons.
Denzel Martin has been brought in as assistant outside linebackers coach after a decade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was the outside linebackers coach for the last three seasons.
Max McCaffrey takes on the role of running backs coach, having also spent three seasons as an offensive assistant under McDaniel.

These changes reflect the Chargers’ ambition to enhance their coaching framework and improve performance on the field. The team’s management appears committed to creating a competitive environment as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As the Chargers move forward with their revamped coaching staff, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the team’s performance in the league.
