Orioles Sign Thairo Estrada to Minor League Deal for Infield Depth

The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran infielder Thairo Estrada to a minor league contract, bolstering their infield depth in the wake of Jordan Westburg‘s elbow injury. Westburg is expected to be sidelined until at least May 2025, prompting the Orioles to seek additional options ahead of the upcoming season. Estrada’s deal includes an invitation to spring training, allowing him to compete for a spot on the major league roster.

Last season, Estrada appeared in just 39 games for the Colorado Rockies, posting a batting average of .253. Following the season, the Rockies declined his $7 million mutual option for 2026, which resulted in a $750,000 buyout. This decision has made Estrada a valuable addition for the Orioles, who are looking to fill the gap left by Westburg’s absence.

Despite his recent challenges with injuries, Estrada brings a wealth of experience to the Orioles. He primarily played second base for Colorado in 2025 but has also seen time at shortstop, third base, and the outfield throughout his career. His season was significantly impacted by injuries; he made his debut on May 30, 2025, after recovering from a fractured right wrist sustained when he was hit by a pitch from Kumar Rocker on March 20, 2025. Further setbacks included a strained right thumb that sidelined him from July 7 to July 25 and a hamstring injury that ended his season on August 5, 2025.

Estrada made his major league debut with the New York Yankees in 2019 and later played for the San Francisco Giants from 2021 to 2024. He achieved career highs in 2022 and 2023, hitting 14 home runs in both seasons, showcasing his potential as a hitter.

As the Orioles prepare for the 2026 season, the addition of Estrada may prove essential in maintaining their competitive edge, particularly while they await Westburg’s return. With a strong spring training performance, Estrada could secure a significant role within the team, contributing both defensively and offensively.
