Stockton Man Convicted in Deadly Family Shooting
A San Joaquin County jury has convicted 23-year-old Kenneth Ernesto “Ernie” Mejia of second-degree murder and multiple felony charges after a fatal shooting involving a family member and two children. The verdict marks a decisive moment in a case that sent shockwaves through Stockton when it unfolded on November 9, 2024.
Mejia had claimed self-defense but the jury rejected this defense, finding him responsible for opening fire on a relative during a violent confrontation that also endangered two young boys, ages under 12. Prosecutors detailed how Mejia had harassed the children, even swerving his vehicle toward them as they rode home on bicycles.

The tragedy escalated when the children’s father confronted Mejia at his residence over the harassment. Prosecutors revealed that Mejia fired multiple shots, hitting the father three times — twice in the back — as he attempted to flee. The victim died at the scene.
Mejia also fired into another vehicle, narrowly missing its occupant, adding to the gravity of the charges against him.
Extensive Charges and Heavy Sentence Pending
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Mejia was convicted of second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement, attempted murder with a firearm enhancement, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon involving a motor vehicle.
District Attorney Ron Freitas issued a statement condemning the violence and praising the investigative and prosecution teams for their work. He noted the difficult testimony given by the young boys was critical in securing justice.
Ron Freitas: “The defendant chose a path of lethal violence over the bonds of family… I am incredibly proud of our prosecution team and law enforcement partners…”
Law enforcement officers credited for their efforts include Detective Matthew Majeski, Detective Magana, Sgt. Barrington, and Investigator Michael Gandy. Support staff such as witness coordinator Alexis Soto and victim advocate Isabella Cruz were also acknowledged for aiding the victim’s family through the difficult proceedings.
Next Steps: Aggravating Factors Trial and Sentencing
Mejia is scheduled to return to court on June 29, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. for a trial on aggravating factors and sentencing. He faces a possible sentence of 40 years to life in prison, plus 11 years.
This verdict brings temporary closure to a violent chapter for the Stockton community, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence within families and the resilience of victims and witnesses who stood up for justice.
