Driver Arrested for Altered License Plates During Early Morning Traffic Stop on Longboat Key
Longboat Key Police arrested a man early April 25 after discovering altered license plates on a vehicle traveling southbound on Gulf of Mexico Drive. The arrest followed a traffic stop conducted by Officer Troyer at 2:44 a.m., who recognized the driver from a prior warning for expired vehicle registration.
Officer Troyer noted the black GMC Yukon bore a Tennessee license plate with a validation sticker that appeared tampered with — specifically, the number “5” was altered with a Sharpie to resemble a “6.” Further investigation revealed the vehicle’s actual registration had expired in February 2026, and the Tennessee plate belonged to another person from that state.
The driver was immediately arrested and transported to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Jail. Despite being read his constitutional Miranda rights, he chose not to speak. The Tennessee plate was confiscated as evidence, and the case was officially filed.
Officer Mathis assisted by ensuring the passenger, who did not have a valid driver’s license, arranged towing for the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger were cleared of outstanding warrants.
