Tahoe Ski Resorts Gear Up for Winter with Intensive Prep Efforts

UPDATE: As winter approaches, Tahoe ski resorts are ramping up preparations to ensure an unforgettable ski season. With over a dozen resorts in the region, including Diamond Peak, Heavenly Mountain Resort, and Kirkwood, the race against time to get ready is in full swing.

Ski enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the first snowfall, but behind the scenes, a dedicated team is working tirelessly to ensure everything is in place. At Diamond Peak, preparations began immediately after closing day, with extensive inspections and maintenance of lifts, snow guns, and snowcats. John Tarmey, Slope Maintenance Manager, emphasizes, “Every little piece of this whole system is tested and tried.”

Developing technology plays a crucial role in the preparations. Heavenly Mountain Resort is utilizing 95 computer-controlled snow guns, strategically positioned to maximize snow production. Managers start assessing weather patterns as early as October, ensuring they capitalize on the ideal snowmaking windows. A dedicated team of 35 staff members works around the clock, ensuring that every moment is utilized efficiently.

As the days grow shorter, anticipation builds. Billy Clark, Snowmaking Manager at Heavenly, expresses the excitement of the upcoming opening day, where guests can experience the fruits of their labor. “Everybody’s smiling and hooting and hollering,” he shares.

Meanwhile, at the Kirkwood Fleet Maintenance Shop, a specialized team of 6-10 members is critical to keeping operations running smoothly. They manage a variety of vehicles, from snowcats to public transportation, adapting to the ever-changing demands of the ski season. Fleet Maintenance Supervisor Kruz Toribio states, “We couldn’t keep this place running as nearly as well if we didn’t have the right team to do it.”

In addition to vehicle maintenance, Kirkwood ensures that fuel stations are operational ahead of the influx of visitors. The urgency of preparing for potential emergencies underscores the importance of this operation, as failure in vehicle maintenance could disrupt the entire resort.

Palisades Tahoe is also gearing up for another successful winter, known for its extended spring skiing seasons. Managers utilize LiDAR technology to monitor snow depths, allowing them to maintain optimal conditions for a longer season. Brendan Gibbons, Director of Snow Surfaces, highlights the efficiency of their operations, stating, “It’s always been a science, but now it’s a more predictable science.”

With these extensive efforts underway, Tahoe ski resorts are poised for a successful season. As snowmaking technology advances and dedicated teams work tirelessly, skiers can look forward to hitting the slopes sooner than ever. Stay tuned for the latest updates as opening days approach and winter descends on Tahoe!
